About UN Peacekeeping Ministerial 2025

 ● Co-organisation and Hosting: The event was jointly organised and hosted by Germany.  
  ● Anniversary Alignment: The gathering took place on the 10th anniversary of the 2015 New York Summit on Peacekeeping.  
  ● India's Commitments: During the ministerial meeting, India committed to providing a Quick Reaction Force (QRF) Company, a women-led Police Unit, a SWAT Police Unit, and initiatives for peacekeeping training, capacity building, and partnerships.  

United Nations Peacekeeping

 ● Origin: Initiated in 1948 with the creation of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO). Commonly referred to as Blue helmet.  
  ● Deployment Mechanism: The UN Security Council assigns mandates to missions through the adoption of a resolution. The budget and resources require approval from the General Assembly.  
  ● Governance: The Department of Peace Operations (DPO), officially established in 1992, offers political and executive guidance to peacekeeping missions.  
  ● Award & Honor: Received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1988.  
  ● Doctrines:  
    ● Capstone Doctrine: Outlines the guiding principles and primary objectives of UN Peace operations.  
    ● Responsibility to Protect (R2P) Doctrine (2005): Represents a political commitment to eliminate severe forms of violence and persecution.  

India’s Key Contribution to UN Peacekeeping

 ● Capacity Building: The Centre for United Nations Peacekeeping (CUNPK) in New Delhi, founded by the Indian Army, acts as India's central hub for training in peacekeeping operations.  
  ● Promoting Gender Parity: India was the pioneer in sending an all-women Formed Police Unit to Liberia in 2007.
