News Context

The golden jubilee of the Department of Official Language has been commemorated.
      ○ It was founded in 1975.
      ○ It is a division of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Official Language (Part XVII of Constitution)

Article 343 states that the official language of the Union is to be Hindi in the Devanagari script. The Official Language Act of 1963 allows for the use of English, alongside Hindi, for all official purposes of the Union and for conducting business in Parliament. Article 344 involves the establishment of a Commission and Committee on the Official Language. According to Article 345, a State Legislature has the authority to adopt any one or more languages used within the state or Hindi as the official language of that state.
