About Office of Vice President
● Second-highest constitutional office in the nation.
○ The Constitution does not specify who assumes the Vice President’s duties when the position is vacant.
Articles and Descriptions:
● Article 63: Establishes that there shall be a Vice President of India.
● Article 64: The Vice President serves as the ex officio chairman of the Council of States (Rajya Sabha).
● Article 65: The Vice President is to act as President or discharge his functions during temporary vacancies or the President's absence.

● Election: The Vice President is elected by an electoral college comprising members of both Houses of Parliament, using a system of proportional representation with a single transferable vote and secret ballot. Each vote in the Vice-Presidential election holds the same value, i.e., 1.
● Qualifications: Must be a citizen of India, at least 35 years old, qualified for election as a member of the Council of States (Rajya Sabha), and must not hold any office of profit.
● Article 67: The Vice President holds office for a term of five years, can resign by submitting a written resignation to the President, and can be removed by a resolution from the Rajya Sabha, approved by the Lok Sabha. The Vice President continues in office until a successor takes charge, even after the term expires.
● Article 68: An election to fill a vacancy in the office of Vice President due to death, resignation, or removal should be conducted as soon as possible.
