Tropical cyclones are violent storms that originate over oceans in tropical areas and move over to the coastal areas bringing about large scale destruction caused by violent winds, very heavy rainfall and storm surges.

They are given many names in different regions of the world – eg.they are known as Typhoons in the China Sea and Pacific Ocean; Hurricanes in the West Indian islands in the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean; Tornados in the Guinea lands of West Africa and southern USA.; Willy-willies in north-western Australia and Tropical Cyclones in the Indian Ocean.

उष्णकटिबंधीय चक्रवात (Tropical cyclones) वे हिंसक तूफान होते हैं जो उष्णकटिबंधीय क्षेत्रों में महासागरों के ऊपर उत्पन्न होते हैं और तटीय क्षेत्रों में पहुँचकर हिंसक हवाओं, बहुत भारी वर्षा और तूफानी लहरों के कारण बड़े पैमाने पर विनाश लाते हैं।

उन्हें दुनिया के विभिन्न क्षेत्रों में कई नाम दिए जाते हैं – जैसे कि उन्हें चीन सागर और प्रशांत महासागर में टाइफून (Typhoons) के रूप में जाना जाता है; कैरिबियन सागर और अटलांटिक महासागर में पश्चिम भारतीय द्वीपों में हरिकेन (Hurricanes) के रूप में; पश्चिम अफ्रीका और दक्षिणी अमेरिका के गिनी भूमि में टॉर्नेडो (Tornados) के रूप में; उत्तर-पश्चिमी ऑस्ट्रेलिया में विली-विलीज़ (Willy-willies) के रूप में और भारतीय महासागर में उष्णकटिबंधीय चक्रवात (Tropical Cyclones) के रूप में।
